Front door won't lock tonight? What to do next
Get help for a door that will not secure: who to call, what to report, how to keep an exit usable, and what the first repair visit may involve.
If your front door will not lock tonight, stop forcing the key, handle or door. The next step depends on whether you are locked out or the entrance itself will not secure.
- If there is an active threat or immediate danger, move to safety and call 911.
- If you are locked out and the entrance is intact, contact a locksmith who provides lockout assistance.
- If damage or a door, frame or hardware problem prevents the entrance from securing, call Glassma at (206) 330-9103 for availability in Seattle and Puget Sound. Say whether the door will not shut, will not stay closed or closes but will not lock.
- Keep a usable exit. Do not block an occupied entrance with furniture, chains or a fixed board.
What to tell the repair provider
Use what you have already noticed. You do not need to take anything apart or repeat a difficult movement to investigate.
| What happens | Useful detail to report |
|---|---|
| The door will not shut | Where it catches or drags, and whether this started suddenly |
| It shuts but swings open again | The latch does not hold it closed |
| It stays closed but will not lock | Whether the key or inside thumbturn stops, or turns without securing the door |
| The door, glass or frame is damaged | What happened and whether anything is loose or unstable |
Give your city or ZIP code and mention if this is the only entrance, a shared exit or an access-controlled door. For a rental or shared building, contact the property manager to arrange access and approval for work.
Why the problem may involve more than the lock
The latch or locking bolt must line up with its opening in the frame. Sagging hinges, a changed frame or weather stripping can interfere with that alignment, according to Schlage's door alignment guide.
If the lock previously worked with the door open but failed when closed, mention it. That history helps explain the fault without testing the door again. For a smart lock, report the model and any warning it displays.
What happens at the first visit?
Glassma's unsecured-door service considers the door, frame and hardware together. The repair may involve alignment, compatible hardware or damaged fixing points. If parts need ordering, agree what can be done now and what access limitations will remain.
Temporary protection must preserve a safe way out. Seattle Fire Department advises keeping exit ways clear. If you cannot safely use the space, move to a safe location while help is arranged.
Before booking, confirm attendance or after-hours charges and what the estimate includes. Before the technician leaves, have them demonstrate closing, latching, locking and opening, and explain any follow-up work.
For urgent help, call to confirm availability. You can send door details for follow-up, but the form does not confirm an emergency appointment.
