Broken window at home or work: what to do first

What to do after a window breaks: keep clear of glass, get help with an exposed opening, and arrange temporary protection and replacement.

If a window has broken, deal with immediate danger first, then arrange help for the opening.

  1. Move people and pets away from the glass. Do not reach into the frame or remove hanging pieces.
  2. If you suspect a burglary, stay outside and wait for police before entering. Call 911 for an active threat, serious injury or crime in progress.
  3. For an exposed opening in Seattle or Puget Sound, call Glassma at (206) 330-9103 to confirm repair availability and discuss temporary protection. You do not need measurements or the glass type to call.

Seattle Police's burglary guidance explains why you should wait before entering after a suspected break-in. After an accident with no ongoing threat, keep the area out of use while you arrange the repair.

While you wait

Stay clear of the opening and the space below it. Avoid opening or closing a damaged window or door to test it. You do not need to make the opening tidy for the technician.

A photo of the whole opening and frame can help if you can take it from a safe position. A spoken description is enough if you cannot. For a rental or shared building, notify the property manager and identify who can approve work.

When calling, give your city, what broke and whether people need to pass the damage. For example, "Our ground-floor shop window is missing glass, and customers use the doorway next to it."

Can it wait until morning?

An opening accessible from outside, glass hanging over a passageway or rain entering a room needs prompt attention. Describe those conditions when calling. If you cannot safely remain in the affected space, move somewhere safe while arranging assistance.

A cracked pane still in place may need a different repair from a missing window. Describe it without pressing on the glass.

Will the first visit replace the glass?

The first visit may provide temporary boarding, with replacement glass measured and ordered for a later visit. Glassma's exposed-opening service covers temporary-protection assessment and repair planning.

Before booking, confirm the arrival estimate, charges, glass cleanup and whether the price covers temporary protection, permanent repair or both. Agree who will arrange replacement and remove any temporary cover.

If you plan an insurance claim, keep safe-distance photos and receipts, and contact your insurer about inspection before permanent repairs. Washington's homeowner insurance guide explains these steps. Coverage depends on your policy and claim.

For urgent help, call to confirm availability. You can also send details about the opening, but the form does not book or dispatch a visit.
